I see some other benefits for having WVU.

The most obvious is the football rivalries with VT and Pitt plus secondary ones with Syracuse, Louisville, UVA, etc. And granted the fan behavior and lower tier academic reputation are a downside.

There are some other positives though. WVU's men's basketball is competitive, and it has been for about 3 coaches now. WVU brings another wrestling school. The ACC could use a seventh member sponsoring wrestling as it is trying to grow stature in wrestling. WVU brings women's gymnastics. Three ACC schools sponsor women's gymnastics today. Adding WVU would enable the conference to sponsor it meeting the minimum of 4. Any new sport is content for any network.

But the biggest reason is regional geographics. It just makes sense for that mostly. WVU sits in a hole in our map.
